At approximately 1:40 PM today, we experienced a network outage. As is customary, our network staff began diagnosing the problem and made an initial call to our internet connection provider, the Connecticut Education Network (CEN). The CEN Helpdesk informed us that they were not aware of any network issues.

Diagnosing the problem was extremely difficult because our network devices where so overwhelmed with incoming network traffic that our network staff were unable to get access to them. They restarted the devices, only to see them immediately become overwhelmed and unresponsive again. This pointed to a Denial of Service (DOS) attack on our network.

Our connection to the internet is currently unavailable.   We are working to reestablish our connection and hope to have this resolved soon.  We will update this site as  events progress.

We’ve been receiving many reports of users finding large amounts of unexplained nondelivery messages in their inboxes. These nondelivery (or “bounce”) messages typically from MAILER-DAEMON appear to indicate that the user has been sending Spam to external servers, and the Spam messages have been rejected by the remote servers.

Wesleyan’s connection to the Internet will be briefly disrupted at 5:30 PM this afternoon for mainetenance. We expect that any disruption will last less than five minutes.

This Thursday, April 3rd, the TSM service will be unavailable starting at 10:00 AM. The interruption period will be brief.

Most desktop backup schedules should have completed by 10:00 AM and will not be affected. Some morning backup schedules will be interrupted. Please note that any restores will fail during this period.

We have been experiencing sporadic slowness in connecting to the internet since yesterday evening. We are working in cooperation with our network vendors and network provider to identify and correct the problem as soon as we can.

Server facstaff, serving email for a variety of users, will need to be shutdown for 15 mins on this Friday at 5:15PM.

Email will be briefly interrupted for users with their inbox on facstaff, but no messages will be lost.

Security Patches will be applied to the PeopleSoft and CURL Databases on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 during the regular Tuesday morning backup. The backup window will be completed at the regular time (7:30 AM).

Database Security Patches will be applied to the Blackboard WesCard System from 6:00 - 8:00 AM on Friday, March 21st.

The Dragon file server will be down for maintenance from 11PM on March 19th to 5AM on March 20th and again from 11PM on March 20th to 5AM on March 21st. During the downtime, we will complete the migration of data and home directories to more reliable disks. Please close all documents open from Dragon before 11PM on the 19th and 20th or all unsaved changes will be lost.
